So how does it work...?

The modern diesel engines relies on many sensors within the engines control system eg throttle position sensor, boost sensors, O2 sensors, mass air flow sensor etc, the signals from which determine how the diesel engine performs and alters its parameters to suit certain conditions, like idle, full throttle, heavy load etc. These sensor signals are all collected and processed thousands of times a second by the vehicles ECU which determines what alterations to make to the engines system to keep it running at full efficiency (usually economy and emissions).

Our diesel tuning performance systems intercept and alter this sensor data/signal, and we can tell the ECU what we want it to do, not what it is programmed to do. The compression ratio of the diesel engine is far greater than a petrol engine often upto a ratio 25:1, (diesel ignites under compression), so you will find that within the cylinders remain more air than is needed for combustion alone. This means by slightly increasing the amount of injection, we are making full use of the full cylinder capacity which dramatically improves both power & torque. Because the engine is now more efficient, economy is also improved as you will use less throttle and gear changes for the same conditions. Diesel tuning has many benefits to be gained.

Some diesel facts:

  • Fuel passes through the injector jets at speeds of nearly 1500 miles per hour (2400 km/h)
  • Fuel is injected into the combustion chamber in less than 1.5 ms, about as long as a camera flashes.
  • The smallest quantity of fuel injected is one cubic millimetre, about the same volume as the head of a pin.
  • If the crankshaft of a six-cylinder engine is turning at 4500 rpm, the injection system has to control and deliver 225 injection cycles per second.
  • On a demonstration drive, a Volkswagen 1-litre diesel-powered car used only 0.89 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres
  • In Europe, sales of diesel-powered cars overtook petrol cars at the end of 2006
